Bancroft Construction Donates “Hero” Painting to Wilmington Fire Department in Ceremony to Celebrate WFD’s Centennial, National First Responders Day

A pillar in the community since 1921, the Wilmington Fire Department has kept its commitment to work in partnership with the citizens of Wilmington to provide an effective and safe environment and enhanced quality of life for all. This year, 2021, marks a milestone year for the Wilmington Fire Department as they celebrate their Centennial Anniversary, a Century of Dedication & Valor, to the City of Wilmington and its citizens. 

United States Congress designated October 28 as National First Responder’s Day. Bancroft wanted to express our gratitude to the Wilmington Fire Department and celebrate the men and women who are an integral part of our community who sacrifice so much more than long work hours, by donating Michael Israel’s famous “Hero” painting, a tribute to September 11, 2001. Bancroft also provided lunch to all First Responders on duty that day at each of the Wilmington Fire Department’s stations to further express our appreciation for their dedication and sacrifice to the community. 

This donation is part of a greater effort by the Associated Builders and Contractors of Delaware ABCares program, a community service committee with a mission to make a difference in their community through volunteering to positively impact the quality of life in the First State. For First Responders Day, ABC Delaware’s member companies honored every fire department in the state to show their appreciation and thankfulness to local firefighters. 

“We are incredibly humbled by the generous donation from Bancroft Construction. This year the fire service marks 20 years since 9/11 and the greatest loss of firefighters ever. This painting will be displayed with pride at our department headquarters and will remind all those who enter of the supreme sacrifice made by so many that day,” said Chief of Fire John Looney. 

The official presentation and unveiling of the painting took place during a special event, including Mayor Michael Purzycki and staff, Chief of Fire John Looney and staff, Greg Sawka, President and CEO of Bancroft Construction along with other Bancroft personnel, at the Louis L. Redding City/County Building on National First Responders Day, October 28.
